Blists Hill Victorian Town

Just before the start of the wonderful weekend conference of the Romantic Novelists' Association, I got the chance to take part in a 'Love of the Past' historical authors event at Blists Hill Victorian Town at Ironbridge in Shropshire.

Many of us entered into the event by dressing up in some way according to the period in which we write and we certainly attracted a lot of interest from visitors. But the Victorian town itself is amazing, with replicas of many of the shops that would have been available in the 19th century. You can even change your money at the 'bank' for old pennies and use them to buy goods for sale.

One of my favourite shops was the drapers where the lady in charge actually sews many of the items for sale on her old Singer sewing machine. Authentic Victorian clothes are displayed off to one room. Fresh bread is on sale at the bakers and an old-style fish and chip shop did a roaring trade at lunch time!

This is one place to revisit another time.
