British Newspaper Archive
Saw this link to the British Newspaper Archive in a recent copy of Writing Magazine. Looks like a great resource for researching a particular date or event from old newspapers. You can get some access free and there is an option to buy a package for more extensive research.
One of my favourite research books from the book shelf at home is my old copy of The Illustrated London News which contains original material from some of the newspapers first published in May, 1842. The photos are a wonderful depiction of Victorian Britain.

A very useful resource, Rosemary. Thanks for highlighting it.
Old newspapers can set ideas off, as well as giving you a snapshot into the past, and how national and local events were viewed.
You're welcome, Carol.
